The Cisco CCNA R&S (Routing and Switching) certification is an entry-level credential associated with a networking field. To get the CCNA R&S certification, you will be required to complete the 200-125 CCNA exam within 90 minutes. This test contains approximately 60 to 70 questions and is divided into 7 sections each containing a different number of subtopics. The exam objectives are technologies of LAN switching, routing, and WAN, network fundamentals, infrastructure services, management, and security. Alternatively, you can take the 100-105 ICND1 and the 200-105 ICND2 tests. The ICND1 exam deals with network fundamentals, routing technologies, technologies for LAN switching, service and maintenance of infrastructure. The ICND2 certification test covers technologies for LAN switching, IPv4 and IPv6, routing technologies, service and maintenance of infrastructure, and WAN technologies. The CCNA exam is a combination of these two tests.

Once certified, the Cisco CCNA Routing and Switching credential has a validity of 3 years. After this period passes, one will be required to take a recertification exam. This Cisco certification has no prerequisites. A candidate from any field can earn it. However, children under the age of 13 cannot take the exam while those between 13 and 17 require parental consent. Those who are 18 years and above do not face any restrictions. It is recommended for the students to have a two-year experience in networking.
